What is Happening Upstairs?

As we move to Phase 2 of the renovation, the Committee has been soliciting bids from contractors/vendors to address the requirements to improve the areas. All bids have not been received, but we have established an expected budget amount for each category.

The original directive to this Committee was to address a number of capital project areas with up to $2 million dollars of the proceeds from the sale of church property. It is anticipated that the remaining items will reach the $2 million dollar limit. The Committee requested and was approved to deploy all remaining funds up to $2 million, which based on the final Sanctuary cost of $1,477,085.92 would leave $522,914.08 available for this phase.

Once the final accounting of the Sanctuary cost, the amount available for Phase 2 will be adjusted to ensure we do not exceed $2 million dollars. The Trustees, Finance Committee, and Church Council approved the Phase 1 capital projects.

The following is status of areas that are budgeted for this next phase. You will notice that this list exceeds the funds we are requesting because there are some other funds available in grants that we are hoping to obtain to address that portion of work.

Congregational Care

The existing Congregational Care area on the second floor has been renovated as a suite with a glass door entrance complete with signage. Offices for this team are upgraded with new flooring, paint, ceiling tiles, lighting, and sound dampening. The area includes a small kitchen and a living room which provides space for families planning funeral/memorial services or meeting space. The funds allocated to this area include all work needed, furniture, appliances and equipment for a fully functional space. This space will provide our Care team a dedicated private space to care and support our congregation and community.

The work for this area was substantially complete in June 2024 with the only outstanding items: blinds and DSS for fire alarm and smoke detector installation. This resulted in an increase in overall budget of $799 totaling $94,500.

CRStudents

Once the CRStudents/Upper Room’s renovation budget was completed it was determined that the complete budget to address all areas was $326,000.  While we have $250,000 committed through the Capital Improvement Plan, this would leave $76,000 in necessary improvements to align this area with the goals of the NextGen ministry approach.

The complete budget for the CRStudents/Upper Room renovation is being deployed as follows:

Phase 1 – CRStudents Ministry Renovation – $180,500 – completed in August 2024.

  • Relocation of the CRStudents leadership offices to a central location for easy access by students and parents. Includes two offices, furnishings and a conference table in the reception area.
  • Complete renovation of the Crossing Café area to include painting, new lighting, updating kitchen, all new furnishings including rugs, sofas, chairs, large dining table and chairs, wall coverings, 150 new chairs for the youth area and upper room. Ping pong tables, Foosball table, new TV’s and Video Game Systems are installed.
  • Renovation of all classrooms with new paint, carpet, removal of the old room dividers, new doors to access the classroom on the north side of area, new ceiling tiles and grids (as needed).

Phase 2 – Upper Room Renovation – $145,500 – will  be completed by January 2025!

  • Convert Upper Room space to a multipurpose space to accommodate the varied uses of the space. New multipurpose flooring to be installed similar to what has been installed in other church spaces which will accommodate sports like basketball, pickleball and volleyball and will also accommodate group uses of the space such as Treasured Times and large group meetings. Ceiling grid and furdowns to be removed for an exposed ceiling.  New shatterproof lighting to be installed.  Painting and AVL will also be completed.

Is the Sanctuary Remodel Finished?

Upon approval of the Phase 1 budget of $1,708,680 proposed in March 2023, the Committee has worked tirelessly to implement capital improvements to specifically address the improvements to the Sanctuary for audio-visual upgrades, refurbishing of pews, installation of a lift in our Sanctuary to provide access to the stage area, lighting upgrades and new chairs for the choir. Additionally, new flooring was installed on the main floor and carpet in the stairwells and the narthex. Painting of many parts of the sanctuary was completed. New door hardware was installed throughout the sanctuary. We also have new sound and lighting equipment, including the installation of acoustical treatment panels to provide sound enhancement to the space.

We are in the homestretch for this phase of the renovation. The last piece of equipment should be installed soon – a new video switcher! This is crucial for producing a professional and dynamic livestream, allowing for smooth transitions, real-time adjustments, and the integration of various multimedia elements for our in-person and online services.

As of June 30, 2024, the total funds expended for the Sanctuary renovation are $1,404,612.16.  The remaining items to be paid are estimated at $72,743.76 for a final construction cost of $1,477,085.92.

The Committee has been able to renovate more areas and recognize cost savings by handling this work directly with vendors rather than through a single General Contractor as was planned using the IPD process.
